Passport, VISA, and Other Needed Documents

For the Employee

Passport.  There are five main steps that one must perform in order to obtain a U.S. Passport.  We would like to share with you from the beginning of your passport process that there are different requirements that address individuals in different circumstances.  The appropriate information to obtain a U.S. passport is found on the web link from the U.S. Department of State at http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/first/first_830.html   (U.S. Department of State, December 2008).

o   This website will help identify which course of action you should take depending on a potential employee’s circumstance.  For example, if it one’s first time to obtain a U.S. passport they will need to take the following steps, or if you are eligible to apply by mail the steps to obtain a passport would be different.  Also, there are descriptions of what is considered appropriate evidence from step 2 to 5 named below.

§  STEP 1: Complete and Submit Form DS-11: Application For A U.S. Passport

§  STEP 2: Submit Evidence of U.S. Citizenship

§  STEP 3: Present Identification  

§  STEP 4: Pay the Applicable Fee (This varies from $160 to $35 depending on category for the individual applying, the type of passport, and the processing time selects for a passport)

§  STEP 5: Provide Two Passport Photos

o   If you had already been issued a passport but were under the age of 16 years old, the passport was lost, stolen, or damaged there is another process that you would need to follow.  This information is also found on the U.S. Department of State web link listed above.

o   The standard processing time is currently 3 weeks from the time of application.  As mentioned in the application fee section, there is an expedited processing time that is currently takes 2 weeks.



VISA.  Being eligible for working in South Korea one needs to acquire the proper VISA that will allow them legal ability to work in the country.   Information on how to obtain a VISA for the employment longer than 90 days is found on the Korea Embassy web link http://www.koreaembassyusa.org/  As the Job description listed that the position is for a 11 to 12 month duration the for such an expat position will need to  obtain the correct long-term VISA labeled “Intracompany Transferees (D-7).”

o   Required documents needed are:

§  A valid passport

§  A completed visa application (ms-word) (pdf)

§  Current photo (2” x 2” color) – standard front face identification photo

§  The processing fee would be $45 USD

§  Temporary duty order or statement of employment.

§  Copy of a certificate of setting up a branch office or liaison office

§  Documents verifying achievement of business fund borrowing or copy of business project.

§  Certificate of annual tax.
